Plant Operator Study Hall
Training Material for the
next generation of Utility Plant Operators

Welcome to Better Plant Operators!

Hey there, friend! Welcome to our corner of the internet where plant operators, like yourself, can find practical and free educational resources. We’re just like you—plant operators on a mission to make essential knowledge more accessible.

As experienced plant operators retire, we’re seeing a new wave of operators entering the industry, and they’re used to learning things in a different way. Many plants are now noticing gaps in the fundamental knowledge of these new operators, especially when trying to train them using traditional methods. This got us thinking: why is this happening? We realized it’s because easily digestible training material isn’t as freely available as it should be, you can literally find videos on the internet of every other industry making training material for their niche but content for us is almost non-existent.

Learning to operate a plant in a competent way typically means navigating these routes:

  • Trade School: You could go to a specialized school, but those are few and far between. Many of us don’t have one in our area. You once in a while get an HVAC Trade school student that becomes a plant operator but that’s one in a dozen.
  • Be a Navy Vet: Many skilled operators come from military backgrounds, where they receive some of the best training available. It’s a route that has contributed a lot of expertise to our field. However, not everyone has the opportunity to serve in the military.
  • Apprenticeship: These used to be more common but are now rarer especially outside of big, unionized plants. Even then, if you’ve been in the industry long enough you’d noticed that getting one often meant you had to know someone in the plant to get a shot, as they used to be roles every young adult in the town would compete for.
  • Consulting Firm Training: Great if your company has the budget and the interest. But with tight budgets these days, this isn’t always an option. You can also find yourself being unlucky as some facilities would invest in this once a decade and you may not even be working in the facility when the investment occurs.
  • Self-Taught: Spend years picking up bits and pieces from informal sources or splurge on pricey books.

While there’s more free content out there now, it’s often aimed at engineers, managers, or field techs, rather than the operators who keep everything running smoothly day in and day out.

That’s where we come in. We know how frustrating it can be to search for info that actually applies to your daily grind. Our site is here to fill that gap with straightforward, easy-to-understand content. Whether you’re figuring out pressure and temperature basics, looking to boost turbine efficiency, or just in the mood for some fun operator trivia, we’ve got you covered.

This site is run by someone who’s still learning and loves sharing what he learns. We don’t claim to have all the answers, but we do put in the work to dig up good info and translate it to easily digestible material. Think of this as your go-to hub for plant operations knowledge.

The best thing? this is all free ! You don’t even have to give us your email to access certain material. This is fueled single-handedly by the nerdy passion of the website operator.
